When wanting to make a photo black and white with color in Photoshop Elements for Mac 4.0, this is what you need to do:

Find your picture
Duplicate layer and work on the duplicated layer so your original stays like it is
go to layers & gradient map & choose the black and white gradient
click on your eraser and start erasing what you want in color

it is “A Piece of Cake”!
